Her Loft(s)

Life in the Village is full of inconveniences.
And also in the ‘village’ / estate we live in.

For a start, we have no control over the central air conditioner.
And being well-insulated with a layer (correction: layers of fats), I am feeling way HOTTER than anyone.
My hair is wet from the perspiration, most of the time.
The company has control over the central a/c unit.
In this economy situation, they probably thought that they can save lots of money by turning on the a/c central unit at fixed time.
And over the weekends, when there noone in the office building, they couldn’t be bothered to turn it on for the mere 40 over people in our estate.
Therefore, i hate weekends. It’s too hot to stay in. And sometimes too hot to get out in the 40 degrees heat.

No Electric Power. I am sure you have had enough of my complaints about it.
There isn’t a month that goes by without having no electric power for at least half-a-day, 3-4 times a month.
I used to get very upset when there’s no electricity.
No electricity = no internet connection = no online shopping.
But I have now learned to relax.
If it isn’t too hot, I will nap. Otherwise, I will go to the mall or swim with Amanda.

Water. Most of the time, the color of the tap water varies yellow to yellowish.
Gross.
This is also why most people here have really bad teeth. And if their teeth are good, they either didn’t spend most of their time here or they are fake.
There is also a saying why Yuncheng dentist are good here. Coz there are many bad cases of bad teeth here.

And don’t get me started on the mosquitoes.

There are some perks living in our estate though.
The view of the reservoir. The quietness.
And this Summer, with a higher occupancy rate (we had only 2 last Summer), the land behind most houses either have fruit trees and vegetable plots!

The fruits tree bear fruits only for a few days before they go bad or are infested by worms and bugs.
However, we have fresh vegetables all summer.
The vegetable plots are growing very well.

Eggplants, Pumpkins, Spring Onions, Chili and Tomatoes.

IMG_4293
Plucking fresh lettuce for lunch.

Not our vegetable plots. We know nothing about growing vegetables except on facebook and QQ!
But most families have more than enough for own consumption.
And since we know everyone in the estate, we could just walk into their backyard and pluck whatever needed.
Noone closes their gates here. And in the day, noone locks their door.

Its good to be living in a close community.

Still, I often lament how Yuncheng isn’t a good environment for raising kids.
Though I am aware that Amanda is way more fortunate than most of the kids here.
Still, its every parent’s goal to provide the best for their kids.
She’s still young and as she grows older and is ready for school in Singapore, I hope she doesn’t lose out to her peers.

When we were young, we all LOVE going to the Botanic Gardens and the Zoo.
Dp isn’t as lucky. But lucky him, he didn’t know what he was missing… then.
And oh, he didn’t miss out too much of the Botanical Gardens coz he played and lived in one, plucking and eating fruits direct from the trees in their very own ‘orchard’ when he was a boy.

I remember a pic which I posed and imitated a goat. Baaa…

2 weeks ago, we made a trip to the park. It was a cloudy day but great a day out.
There was a new Amusement + Water Park.
And I was really excited about going to the park. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited in Yuncheng.
It is quite of scale for a small city like Yuncheng.
At least Amanda would have something to remember about her childhood in Yuncheng.

To my disappointment, the Amusement + Water Park was closed due to some reports of inappropriate use of land.
The low land was supposed to protect the city from flood. Not some recreational park.

Anyway, we visited the ‘wildlife zoo’ next to the park.
It was also closed by the officials. But well, this is China!
The man at the entrance overcharged us with an entrance fee of 40rmb for 6 adults, 2 kids and a baby.
It was gross! The ‘wildlife zoo’ is gross.

Wildlife Zoo in Yuncheng.
Half of the zoo.
The ground was muddy and wet.
We had to walked on the 2-brick wide pavement.

Wildlife Zoo in Yuncheng.
Skinny lion.

Wildlife Zoo in Yuncheng.
The tiger is bigger than the cage.

I u-turned and was ready to run out of the zoo when I saw 2 turkeys roaming in our track.
It gave me goose-pimples.

A quick count of animals in the zoo. 2 lions. 1 tiger. 1 snake in a box (not sure what species I was too grossed up). 1 pheasant. A few Monkeys. 2 goats. 2 turkeys. Yikes!

I am definitely adding “Zoo” to our itinerary whenever we get out of Yuncheng.

After the scary visit to the “wildlife zoo”. We had stroll in the park.

Mummy! What was that scary place you just brought me to?

Took some pictures of the closed Amusement Park.
It seem Fun. For Yuncheng.

Found a video on one of the rides.
There’s a Carousel too!

The Park was opened for a week before it was closed by the Officials.
I hope they reopen soon!
There isn’t much to do here and Fun places in Yuncheng are hard to find.

Its going to be a fun place to bring Amanda to. Can’t wait.
I am sure the Owner who invested in the park is more anxious and couldn’t wait too.

SHOPPING!
The bad: Nothing much here. The good: Online shopping.

I am also trying to divert my desire to shop online to desire to blog often.
And I am sure you already know I failed miserably with 1 post a week!!!!
I have also been trying to my update my blog with this post since Wednesday… but got distracted with the shopping and only managed to complete this post 4 days later.
Last week, I have shopped A LOT!
From Dp’s iPad, massive toy (Learning Home) for Amanda, cute pink car accessories right down to a soft lil’ cushion for my crown for a extra volume and height to my hair.
I am suspecting that this cushion will also help to soak up my perspiration.
The week before, I got 出前一丁 instant noodles and Yakult from HK.
They are all very essential and vital for survival here!

Will work harder on blogging next week.

But for now, Time to go get the 101 things I ‘need’ in this Village.

Something I learned from this blog.

Last week, I was really happy about the heavy snow outdoor and feeling warm & toasty indoor.
The central heating was working really well for days until the afternoon after I posted it, the warm, hot air from the central heating turned cold.
We have been getting lots of people since to come to our home to fix the problem, which noone seems to know why.
We switched to another source of heating, floor heating… and its not working as well as the central heating as we have a very tall ceiling.

Then, 2 days ago, I shared about how Amanda will only sleep in her crib at 11.30pm and wakes up at 6 a.m before drifting back to sleep again.
Considering how little she sleeps in the day and has to be carried mostly during the day and during her nap…
this is something we look forward to at the end of the day.
Well, the night after I posted this, she was very playful and wouldn’t till sleep 2 a.m. and 12.45 a.m. last night.

There were a couple of other incidents… :-p
I will never rejoice too early or on this blog at least.
And if i do, I should cross my fingers, toes and touch wood.

Anyway, I also once said I will never let Amanda wear what most babies wear here… thick cotton-filled pants with huge openings in between.
Amanda has enough cotton pants to last her till she’s 2.
Some cotton pants are so thick that they can stand on it own!

Lil' judebabe's 1st fashion disaster...
Previously posted here.

Last week, when the central heating was down, we decided that the thick cotton should keep her warm enough.
Besides the prints are really pretty.

IMG_3224
Polka-dots!!!
And Amanda is trying to put her hand into her mouth…

Not wanting to be ‘exposed’. She wore diapers and a onesie underneath.
I should have taken the big bum opening at the back.
According to the locals, the baby’s bum is like an adult’s face. Not afraid of cold. *rolls eyes*

Details.

IMG_3225
A string is attached and by tying it around the ankle the foot will not get ‘lost’ in the pants.

Here’s one in her high chair.
Her first time in it and she loves it.

IMG_3239

And here’s one smiling!

IMG_3249

It was a big smile and a tongue she gave her daddy. I laughed hence the blur-ness.

Dp was out of Yuncheng for a meeting yesterday.
I used to get upset whenever he’s away… it would mean that I am all alone in Yuncheng.
But last night, I wasn’t upset… I now have company of Amanda and maybe the nanny. heehee!!!

By now, you should know that we have a fantastic view of the reservoir from our windows.
If you don’t, here are more pictures…

View from our bedroom.
View from the bedroom.

View from our bedroom.
Closer look.
On a windy day… the water moving rapidly.
Almost like the sea… a very calm one.

We often get envious look from our visitors as Yuncheng is a pretty ‘dry’ place.
The humidity level here is also higher too.
And because of the open space, in summer, its relatively cooler compared to the old estate.

I once shared that, we have Nature right at our doorstep!
There were some ducks swimming.
Ass up. And heads down in the water, fishing.
We too had some swan-like birds in the reservoir and once I saw an owl at night, by the reservoir.

Someone once fished two huge fishes from the reservoir. It took us a few meals to finish it.
And just yesterday, a massive flock of birds were flying in circles above reservoir.

However, there’s a price to pay to live right next to the nature.
Because we are also at nature’s doorsteps!
Bugs, worms and insects’ doorsteps!
They come crawling and flying into our homes.
Despite having screened windows, they somehow find their way in.

I was once freaked out by a big spider and its massive cobweb outside our windows.

And we hate mosquitoes!!!
For the past 6-7 weeks, our war with mosquitoes begins at night fall.
I wonder where the mosquitoes are in the day but at night, attracted by lights, they gather at the living room.
We use a electric tennis-racket-like to electrocute the mosquitoes. With a burned smell, they are then reduced to ashes.
The nanny with an alert Amanda in her arm ‘patrol’ around the living room, looking for mosquitoes.
Once a mosquito is spotted, Dp and I will be called to attack.
On a busy night last week, we probably killed 10 or more!

Not only they bite (and only me sometimes!), having them buzzing around my ears can keep me up all night.
We now have to light one of these old school mosquito incense before going to bed every night,
hoping to keep them away and not buzz above our heads.

Our war with the mosquitoes - beforeOur war with the mosquitoes - after
Before and After.

I know there are some electric mosquito incense to keep mosquitoes away but somehow have little effect on the mosquitoes here!
I saw a mosquito flying above the the electric mosquito incense unaffected.

Damn! They are fierce.

A friend living in the same estate said mosquito bit her son’s ears,
it swelled and became huge like 猪八戒‘s!
Fortunately, Amanda has her very own mosquito net to keep them away!

Last Friday, was the Opening Ceremony of the new Office Building…

Preparing for the big day.
Preparation. Taken the day before.
A big blown-up Chinese Lion for the big day.

Opening Ceremony.
My bump didn’t stop me from going to the Opening Ceremony…
though many colleagues expected me to be sitting at home!
I hope the loud firecrackers didn’t not startle Lil’ judebabe…

Its a massive building…
And I believe the new office building is one of its kind… at least in the Shanxi Province.

Indoor Garden...
Main attraction of the new massive Office building is the Indoor Garden.
IF you notice the red tiles… the garden is landscaped like the traditional Chinese knot.
The plants should stay green in the cold Winter months…

It takes less than 10 minutes to walk from home to the new office building.
I have decided to take my long walks with Lil’ judebabe in the garden during Winter.
And visit her Daddy in his office…

Mum in the Office Building...
Mum at the garden…
The garden is in the middle of the Office Building…
Everyone in the building will be able to enjoy their break and the view from the corridor.

Since the new office is close to our home, across our estate, we do not have any reason to return to our old estate and room.
The In-laws too have vacated everything in the old estate and moved over to their own home in the same new estate as ours.
We too have been moving our stuffs gradually over the last 2 weekends.
Mostly winter wear, boxes of shoes & boots and loads & loads of rubbish… ;-p

I am getting stressed from the stuffs we have moved over and those we have Not moved over!!!
Running out of space at home and our walk-in wardrobe!!!
Dp complained that our walk-in wardrobe was nothing like what he imagined…

Been searching forums and online for ideas on effective organization.
Am planning to re-organize our walk-in wardrobe during my confinement, once I recover and feel good enough.

Must do it when I have plenty of help with Lil‘ judebabe…

After months of waiting (and complaining) and a month & half, of living back in the old home…
Our life is perfect again… All because the central air conditioner in our very own Home is finally UP!

It feels good to be moving back to our Home for GOOD!!!
And in another 2 weeks, the company will be moving to the massive new headquarters across the estate.
Then, Dp will be able to cycle to work, instead of our daily to-and-fro drive.

Fave photo corner in our home.
Fave corner. Photos and souvenir from vacations.
Will add pictures of Lil’ judebabe, in years to come.

Our fave from Hawaii...
Fave from Hawaii.
Seashells from Ritz Carlton Sanya, nightly turn-down service.
B/W background pictures from NYC street vendors.

The central air conditioner didn’t work at first and took the team a 2 days and 4 times to get it right.
We spent a night at the sauna center as we couldn’t deal with the disappointment of having no air conditioner for another night.
It was the worst decision for me.
The bed was really hard for my heavy body and heavy “curves”.

We have always wondered what is it like to be living and sleeping in our very own Home, in summer, with air conditioner…
Well, its absolutely wonderful not having to wake up to sweaty hair and sticky body.
We were also lucky that the air conditioner was up just before another heatwave…
Days of unbearable heat of 37 deg.!
We both hugged and danced in our home, the very first night the air conditioner was finally UP!

We finally turned our beautiful light on… which we rarely did since getting it, its high watts contributed heat to the already hot living room.

With the new found comfort in our home, I too found the time and effort to be efficient.
I re-organized both our hospital bag. Packing Lil’ judebabe diaper clothes, gloves, booties and stuff separately.
I too took time to read the operation instructions for bottle sterilizer and bottle /food warmer.
As well as time, to take the above pictures.

Another weekend is here!
Time been flying especially FAST for the past few months… *Dp nods with agreement*
A few more weekends to go… before life becomes Perfect of another kind.

We also have a home issues to iron out before Lil’ judebabe arrives.
*Clock ticking*

PS: Wanted to post this yesterday, after the first night of having air conditioner.
But the main electricity was out… it didn’t seem so perfect then. :-p

I light you!

in Her Life,Her Loft(s)

We used to love our ceiling lamp in the living room.

loft & lights.
Lamp and loft.

We love the contemporary chrome finish that fits our city/loft theme apartment.
Or rather “City” in the village! theme.

Old lights.
Close-up of the 30 arms and bulbs.

We too love the style of this unconventional (-to the taste of our local guests) lamp, our guest are often puzzled… trying to understand our choice, taste and the ‘beauty’ of this lamp.

Living room. View from the loft.
Living Room. View from the loft.

Best bit: Its a replica of an iconic Flos 2097 lamp designed in the 1950s.
And we got this lamp cheap online…

We were really proud of our choice until… [click to continue…]
