October 2009

Amanda slept through her flight from Yuncheng to Beijing.
No fuss. No crying. *phew*
In fact, she was sleeping before we left home for the Yuncheng airport and woke up only when we were in the car at Beijing airport.

Even when we were out with her, she slept very well too.
Perhaps she loves the combination of being carried in the arms and moving vehicle / airplane.

She seems to like our Beijing apartment.
She is sleeping so much more, less cranky and is really happy here.
So much so that we should really consider moving back to Beijing!
Nah! Dp, I am just kidding! Besides the climate here is really dry!

She is happy to lie on her back and is smiling a lot more.
She was also winking and charming us!
Picture her lifting her left cheek, squinting her left eyes and smiling.

After submitting her application for Singapore citizenship,
(bad attitude from the local staff and thank you to a very helpful Singaporean staff),
Dp and I were out (a lot) running ‘errands’ at the mall!,
Amanda is home with the nanny.
And is back to drinking from the bottle with lots of coaxing from the nanny.
We return home to check on Amanda every 2-3 hours.

We had a lot of Us-time as SIL would rather hang around at the apartment with her niece than with her brother.

We are now in the apartment with Amanda without the nanny.
We let the nanny off for the day to visit her elder son in the suburb.

I hope Amanda doesn’t give us too much crap!
Pun intended. I can’t handle too much shit.
Wish me luck!

Gtg! Amanda is awake!
Weather seems great today! Will probably bring her out.

Saturday was a busy morning for Amanda.
After her morning activity and bath, we visited and had lunch at her Grandpa Dong’s.
After lunch, Amanda had her passport photo taken.

The ladies / Aunties were very puzzled when they saw Dp carrying a bucket into her studio.
And they all burst out laughing when they realised that there was a baby in it!
It was probably their first time seeing an infant car seat.

Off to GrandPa's...

It wasn’t easy to hold Amanda up for the white backdrop.
She doesn’t have strength to support her own neck long enough.
It took us many tries, different methods and Amanda’s patience to get this…

My black top as the backdrop for Amanda's passport.
My black top as the backdrop for Amanda’s passport.

With the above, the studio PS it into this!

Passport photos...
The results.

That day, Dp and I took our passport photos… we need it one day anyway.
I had make-up put on the first time in 10 months.
I felt great but rusty in my technique. Need to brush up and get a new set of base and powder!

Too fair. A shade darker would be flattering.

I hate my passport photo. They made me neaten my hair and tuck every strand of my hair behind my ears.
I ended up with a very flat hair and a very big face!

We took a photo of our family at the studio too.
I forgot about my flat hair as I was too busy with a grumpy Amanda.

At the studio...
Our family.

Anyway, Amanda will be needing her passport photos when we get to Beijing tomorrow.
We will be applying for her Singapore citizenship.
This will be Amanda’s first flight and her first trip to Beijing. :-)

I hope we can get everything done during this trip.
I have yet to know how difficult traveling with a 8-week-old infant would be…
but I believe Amanda would very much prefer to be at the comfort of her own home.
I think most young babies are!

As for her first flight, I hope she won’t have too much trouble with the take-offs and landings and I will be feeding her then.
This will also be my first feed in public. Will have my nursing cover with me.
Been practicing and getting Amanda used to having a cover over her during mealtimes.
Sometimes she doesn’t give a hoot. Sometimes she would use her hands to push and legs to try kick it off. Haha!

I will also try to enjoy myself in Beijing too.

I want Sashimi!!! I miss Sashimi for the last 10 months!!!
During my confinement, Amanda had eczema whenever I had fish.
She is alright now… as she didn’t react when I had bits of fish last weekend.
I love to eat fish.

Shopping. Yes! A new wardrobe for the winter! That is if I can squeeze my fat ass into anything at all.
Luckily, I have no problems with tops! But with the nursing, it means my clothes would have to have convenient access.
Boots!!! NO MORE BOOTS!!! Unless they are this season’s over-the-knees!!!
Weeks ago, I had difficulty into fitting a few of my boots.
Yesterday I went through my entire boots collection and was relieved that I could still fit into some of them.
It was also then that I found out that I have way too many pair of boots!!!

I too hope that I can have some time with Dp. Just the two of us.
If we do have the Us-time. It would be a dream come true for me!
As I had a dream during my confinement months that it was just Dp and I at a mall.
We were having breakfast and I was over the moon! A sign huh?
Amanda would be in the care of the nanny. And I hope SIL could spare us some Us-time.
She is always sticking with us whenever we are in Beijing.

This is also a good break away from the pesky mosquitoes!
We ran out of mosquito incense.
Last night, I was up all night (no joke!) till 5a.m… and finally slept when I hunt down and killed the 4th & last mosquito in our room. I really hate it when they buzz around my ear.
I now have mosquito bites on my face coz the rest of my body was covered by the blanket!

I am known to over-pack when traveling.
And its going to be the same with Amanda, I want to be prepared for any changes in weather.
While I am having a hard time in deciding any outfits that fit and is pretty to bring along, I am glad that the nanny is in charge of Amanda’s stuff to bring along. She came up with a long long list!
Clothes, towels, blankets and other daily necessities. Amanda is having one big suitcase of her own!

Gotta go!
There’s a wedding lunch downstairs and Dp wants to show off his little girl to the crowd.
Mostly our colleagues.

I love it when the season change because I get to change and update my wardrobe.
And I think Amanda will grow to love change of season too!

These are my favourites…

Pj + Sleeping Bag
Pj + Sleeping Bag

Love the polka dots!
The sleeping bag is great as she sometimes kicks her blanket off at night.

Are you talking & singing to me?
Are you talking to me?

Part of Amanda daily morning activities. Amanda’s toy sings and recites Chinese poems.
I am learning 唐诗 from the Monkey too.

Check out her mittens.

Cuteee…

Getting ready to set off...
Getting ready to go gai-gai

I just received Amanda’s Winter wardrobe today. Like the above, I got them online too.
The above are at 30-40rmb per piece. The winter wear cost more at 50-80rmb per piece.
Good quality. Great prices. And are all very cute…

I am not exactly looking forward to winter (my least fav. season) but it would be fun to see her in those cute thick onesie.

So stay tuned for Amanda’s winter wardrobe…

By now, you should know that we have a fantastic view of the reservoir from our windows.
If you don’t, here are more pictures…

View from our bedroom.
View from the bedroom.

View from our bedroom.
Closer look.
On a windy day… the water moving rapidly.
Almost like the sea… a very calm one.

We often get envious look from our visitors as Yuncheng is a pretty ‘dry’ place.
The humidity level here is also higher too.
And because of the open space, in summer, its relatively cooler compared to the old estate.

I once shared that, we have Nature right at our doorstep!
There were some ducks swimming.
Ass up. And heads down in the water, fishing.
We too had some swan-like birds in the reservoir and once I saw an owl at night, by the reservoir.

Someone once fished two huge fishes from the reservoir. It took us a few meals to finish it.
And just yesterday, a massive flock of birds were flying in circles above reservoir.

However, there’s a price to pay to live right next to the nature.
Because we are also at nature’s doorsteps!
Bugs, worms and insects’ doorsteps!
They come crawling and flying into our homes.
Despite having screened windows, they somehow find their way in.

I was once freaked out by a big spider and its massive cobweb outside our windows.

And we hate mosquitoes!!!
For the past 6-7 weeks, our war with mosquitoes begins at night fall.
I wonder where the mosquitoes are in the day but at night, attracted by lights, they gather at the living room.
We use a electric tennis-racket-like to electrocute the mosquitoes. With a burned smell, they are then reduced to ashes.
The nanny with an alert Amanda in her arm ‘patrol’ around the living room, looking for mosquitoes.
Once a mosquito is spotted, Dp and I will be called to attack.
On a busy night last week, we probably killed 10 or more!

Not only they bite (and only me sometimes!), having them buzzing around my ears can keep me up all night.
We now have to light one of these old school mosquito incense before going to bed every night,
hoping to keep them away and not buzz above our heads.

Our war with the mosquitoes - beforeOur war with the mosquitoes - after
Before and After.

I know there are some electric mosquito incense to keep mosquitoes away but somehow have little effect on the mosquitoes here!
I saw a mosquito flying above the the electric mosquito incense unaffected.

Damn! They are fierce.

A friend living in the same estate said mosquito bit her son’s ears,
it swelled and became huge like 猪八戒‘s!
Fortunately, Amanda has her very own mosquito net to keep them away!

When Dad was in Yuncheng, he kept commenting that Amanda is quite a fussy baby.
“Not easy to look after…” he said.

Here’s an update on Amanda since the last, 3 weeks ago.

6 week old honey bunny.6 week old hunny bunny
Its because of my C-section that she has such a cute round head.
I kinda like it!!!

Amanda’s sleeping quantity and patterns is still our main concern.
Remember how she used to be very alert and cranky in the morning, well, when the weather cooled down about 10 days ago, she’s back to sleeping well on her own in the morning.
Some days, she would still want to be carried when sleeping and is awake when put into her crib.

She used to have a pretty good idea of day and night, when younger but have somehow lost it.
Her ‘night’ seem to extend into mornings, sleeps very little in the afternoon and is now alert in the evening.
She wouldn’t retire for the day till 11.30pm.
We have tried keeping her up all evening but she still wouldn’t sleep till 11.30pm.

Today however, she’s been sleeping all morning and afternoon. Hope she will be not up all night.

On a good night, she wakes up once for her feed. And her next feed would be after 7a.m.
Some nights, she wakes up every 3 hours!

On a good night, her eyes were shut and was probably sleeping through her night feed.
Some nights, she’s cheeky and playful and wouldn’t sleep for the next hour or two after her feed.

When awake, she wants to be carried and wouldn’t let you sit.
And with such sleeping habits, I am really glad to have nanny’s help!!!

6 week old honey bunny.
Look! I can lift my legs!

Amanda used to drink very well from the bottle but have recently refused it.
Crying very very loudly as though we are feeding her toxic… even when its expressed milk in the bottle.
Her cries were so loud that it leaves us with no choice but to give in.
We will however persevere till she back to drinking from the bottle like a pro.

Lately, she seems interested to interact and is responsive when talked to.
And sometimes I thought I saw her smile when playing.
The nanny claims that she was giggling, a few days ago.
I am looking forward to her very first distinct social smile!

She used to hate the swing and wouldn’t sit in it.
But decided to like it when she was 31 day old.
Some days she would fall asleep in it and on some days she would only sit in it for 10 minutes.
But I believe she is gradually falling in love with it.

A day after her full month.
Looking small in her swing.

42 day old.
Filling the newborn insert very quickly.

IMG_3058
My eyelids are getting heavy…
So are my cheeks.

Amanda’s grandaunt who visited a few days ago, couldn’t stop commenting how much Amanda has changed since she last saw her 10 days ago.
And thinks we are feeding Amanda too much when she saw her round tummy after her bath. haha!
Indeed, Amanda is putting on very quickly after her full month. She now weighs 5.6kg.

Amanda had her many First-s this week. Including her first sniff of the King of fruit, Durian.
She had her first afternoon stroll within the estate with Dp and me, in the baby carrier.
Yay! She no longer look ‘lost’ in it!

While her previous outings were to Grandpa Dong’s house in the estate, we got adventurous and brought her out of the estate.
A trip to the supermarket and to visit her Grandaunt.

I wasn’t too sure if she would hate car rides like me, when I was a baby – crying non-stop.
Turns out she enjoyed the view through the sunroof and fell asleep shortly.
She stayed asleep throughout our grocery shopping.

We finally found time to set up her safety car seat base today.
She was also very cooperative when we were adjusting the safety belt positions, even when we kept putting and lifting her in and out of the car seat several times.

In her car seat.
I can now sleep safely during car rides.

When we were done, we could tell that she loves her seat. She looks safely snugged and comfy in it..
And seem to enjoy when Dp carried her in her seat around the house.

We took out the car seat’s newborn insert but kept the head insert for support.
Our baby girl isn’t a newborn anymore and is growing up very quickly.

Like the Chinese saying here, 有苗不愁长!

I found Dp’s old passport.
And searched for his UK immigration entry date, 8 years ago.
It was on the 13th October 2001.

I checked with him if we met on that very day, he said he remember sleeping (jet lagged) for the whole of following day, before meeting me for the very first time.

This makes 15th October, another special date, to add to a bunch of other special dates that calls for celebration and gifts (for myself).
Woo-hoo!

You all know we met in Manchester but how did we really meet???
He was doing his Masters and I was there for my degree. We weren’t even classmates.

Well, Dp flight arrived at the Manchester airport late at night and someone from the Uni was supposed to pick him up.
When no one did, he took a taxi to the Uni’s accommodation office.
Of course, the accommodation office was close at night.
The security guard was contacting the accommodation staff.
Keith, a fellow Singaporean, passed by the office, offered to put Dp up at his place.
(I do think that its very kind of Keith to pick up a stranger and offer help to a fellow Chinese.)
After a day and night of sleeping, Keith brought Dp over to our flat for dinner…
That’s when and how we met for the very first time.

I’ve always believe that it’s fate that we met.

You think the rest is history? Love at first sight? Nah!
We were actually discussing how old Dp looks for his age that day we met… haha!

Dp was extremely shy that he never talk in Gwen’s and my presence until some time in January ’02.
Before when he’s in our flat with Keith, he doesn’t talk.
Sitting in his corner eat when told and washed the dishes when asked to.

Things changed or the real him emerged, when we were all out for the ’02 Countdown in town, we had difficulty getting a taxi so we walked all the way back to our flat.
Like most of our night’s out anyway. Those days.
Then, being young, we spent the whole night up chatting.
That night, In the comfort of his friends, Dp was very relaxed and chatting very happily…
He opened up a lot more since.

Voss - I love sunset.

*muack*

Over lunch this afternoon, I told him that today is another special day.
And how everything would be very different now if we haven’t met, i.e, He wouldn’t be this happy now. :-p
His face was buried in the rice bowl but I knew he was smiling.

Other than meeting Dp -my very own village boy, Amanda is the best thing that happened because we met.

As I am typing this post, Dp is playing and talking to his precious baby girl.
A while ago, I took a break to kiss her. He pushed me away coz I took his seat to play with his girl. :-p
So Sweet huh?

Taken 15 Oct.
Taken this morning.

But he did something pretty evil last night.
He woke a sleeping Amanda with the smell of durian!!!
It was funny to see her twitch her nose, frown and wake up disgusted! Haha!!!
Btw, our confinement nanny described the King of fruit, Durian as smelly rotten onion!

To my Baby Amanda – Your Grandpa Dong and Daddy hated durian too! But they are now in love with it.
I am sure you will grow to love durian too.
I swear you were kicking and moving a lot when I was eating durian during pregnancy,
I think you were loving it then.
