in Her Life

For some reason, I don’t remember learning about the world map during school.
In fact, I don’t even remember what I learnt in school!

OPPS!!!

I wish I remember what I learnt from school, in a way, I think it will make my life a little better.
And of coz, I will also become Smarter!

For the last few years, I have taken a liking to staring at maps!
Not that I am trying to memorise, but I hope that by staring at maps, long and hard enough, I will eventually have a “photographic memory” of the world map.
So that I can be like Dp and have the world map, at the back of my head.

Staring at the maps, somehow makes the world seem smaller!
Especially places that you have heard but do not know where, is actually a neighbour of some other countries…
and then, you start linking them up, one by one.
Like how Kyrgyzstan is north of Tajikistan, Tajikistan is southeast of Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan is south of Kazakhstan…
you know…

Since I said that I am going to talk more about Yuncheng, I think I will start with its location.

When I first moved to China, I can easily tell anyone, I am living in Beijing.
Everybody knows Beijing, the capital of China, where the olympic will be held in 2008.
And when I start travelling around other parts of China, it starts to get complicated!

Guess this simple map of China may help to simplify things…

china province map

Its very interesting that the outline of China, resembles a chicken.
Of coz, if you know your world map well, Japan, the northeast of China, resembles a worm.
As if, the beak of chicken that pecks on the worm.

Yuncheng is in Shanxi, if can’t find, try the upper back / neck of the chicken! :-p

If the above map is too simple for you…
Read this…

china

From time to time, I think I will make reference to this map…
I THINK! Hee!

The next map narrows down to Shanxi and the most southern city, Yuncheng!
This simple map, too indicates the tourist spots in the province of Shanxi.

So, there you go, NOW YOU KNOW A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YUNCHENG, hopefully China, and the rest of the world,
i.e, Tajikistan..etc…

Ok, well I really know EXACTLY what you mean about how, after looking at a map for awhile, the world seems so much smaller! So then you go on Google Earth – and wow, it’s just so cool…I can see my daugher’s apartment in Beijing, it has a circular shape that is bisected by a main road – you can’t tell that from the ground so easily. I can see where her new apartment is being built east of Chaoyang district (where she lives now). The Forbidden City and Jinshan Park – all there clear as day. Then I click on my bookmarked Xinghai Park in Dalian and ‘zoom’ off we fly and come to a stop just above the park – clear as a bell. Then I click on my home in Enderby, British Columbia – and WOW! over the ocean in a huge trans-pacific arc and down again just above my house…then another click on Syncrude (where I spent a few months a year earning obscene amounts of money) and WOO HOO! it’s up and over and down…yuck, that place looks like hell – or Isengard from Lord Of The Rings….so yeah, I know what you mean. I love Google Earth.

And now we have the GPS in our new Honda Odyssey – we drove to Florida from here a couple of weeks ago – and didn’t use a single paper map! Too cool, so simple and worked so perfectly. I love high tech…now if those brainy scientists can only save us from ourselves before it’s too late (like yesterday, eh?!).
